By the numbers, BART is relatively safe and it is rare that such back-to-back crimes occurred. However, BART police think a crime ring may be responsible and is increasing its presence at the station. Systemwide, BART reported 117 robberies by the end of October this year. In comparison, 137 robberies were reported in 2004 and 113 robberies in 2003 over the same 10 month period. Update: BART officials are reassuring passengers that BART is safe and that the recent string of robberies were unusual.
