News Archives // Archive Index // Latest NewsProject Planned Near Ashby BART Station // December 14th, 2005Berkeley is planning a major development project centered around Ashby BART station. The Berkeley City Council may apply for a $120,000 grant to the California Department of Transportation to create a transit village in the area. Transit villages are housing and commercial areas that spring up around transportation hub, in this case the nearby BART station. The area would be rezoned and revitalized, but some locals are concerned about development. New construction would replace the the western parking lot which is currently used by the Berkeley Flea Market on weekends. While it is logical that existing residents and business be concerned, I think this could improve the area and bring new life to this sleepy part of town.
